A Deadliest Catch producer and cameraman was forced to disembark the Cornelia Marie due to an infection out at sea.

During the Friday, Sept. 4, episode of the Discovery Channel series, titled “Contagion,” Matt Holland developed a facial infection while out at sea, and Captain Jake Anderson is faced with a difficult decision.

After Holland, 38, let out a heavy sigh, he told one of the show’s producers that his face is swelling up “significantly fast” and asked for a break because of the pain. Holland had an inflamed subcutaneous pustule growing between his nose and mouth and was the second crew member to come down with an infection (relief captain Jake Albinio was the first).

“I have a very high pain tolerance, and I’ve met my match,” he told Anderson.

Back on the bridge, Anderson told the cameras that Holland’s infection looked like an infected pimple, but could be MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), which is a type of staph bacteria that is resistant to common antibiotics, according to the Mayo Clinic.

“Being out here, doing this job, it’s about survival. Infections on boats are bad,” Anderson said. “It could get poked by a crab, there’s old cod guts, there’s all kinds of stuff down there that’ll make you sick in all kinds of ways.”

He continued, “One of our guys got some kind of infection on his face. This is something that’s going through the boat, but there’s a lot of crab to catch. I can’t stop. I’m going to keep going.”

“This isn’t like being at work, where you just get in the car or call an ambulance and two minutes later you’re at the hospital,” Anderson explained. “It’s going to be tough, but I think I can do it.”

The next morning, producers checked in on Holland, who said, “I feel like s—, dude. If I didn’t feel like s—, I wouldn’t be lying here.” Anderson told producers that the crew would give Holland antibiotics, but he still has to pick up pots of crab.

Later, Holland told Anderson that the antibiotics were ineffective, and Anderson called supervising producer Lisa Roberts for medical guidance. They concluded that the best option was to go to St. Paul, Alaska, to get Holland medical attention.

In the next scene, Anderson told the crew to sanitize the room Holland was staying in. He called Holland to check in on him, and Holland explained that the infection on his face came in through a pore and grew inward. He noted it was “pressing on my trigeminal nerve,” which can cause “Bell’s Palsy or permanent nerve damage or paralysis in my face.”

Holland said that the recovery is “ten days of no work.” Anderson told him, “Get better, man.”

“It’s a bummer. Matt’s a good guy,” Anderson told the cameras. “But the fact of the matter is, we got to get the hell out of here.” The Cornelia Marie stayed docked until Holland’s replacement Kelsey Kroon climbed aboard. “We need to f—ing get the f— out of here, now,” Anderson said.

“We have a lot of work to do, and time is not on our side,” he added.

The Cornelia Marie set off, and their pots came up with strong numbers, giving him a much-needed fishing win amid Holland’s medical situation. However, several of his crewmembers are medically treated as infections spread. They are given medication and are cleared to return to work.

“I don’t want to lose any one of you guys,” Anderson told them. Despite the health issues on board and the crew being “beat up pretty hard,” the episode concluded with them preparing to return to fishing.
