Whitney Way Thore wasn’t too sure which way her relationship with Jake Beaudoin was going to go leading up to their engagement.

The My Big Fat Fabulous Life star, 42, revealed to PEOPLE during the Creative Arts Emmys at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Saturday, Sept. 5 that she didn’t know Beaudoin was going to propose — and even thought he was heading in the opposite direction.

“I thought he was about to break up with me, which is the funny thing,” Thore shares. “We were on a trip. The whole trip I was telling everybody, ‘I just know when we get home he’s going to leave. I just know he is.’ ”

“He was acting a little weird and can it go one of two ways. Either you’re getting married or you’re breaking up, you don’t know which one,” she says.

The reality star adds that she was “extremely relieved” when she realized that she was getting engaged. Beaudoin popped the question with an aquamarine ring, which Thore teases was “incredibly meaningful.”

She then explained that the proposal came at a time when they both felt ready to take the next step in their relationship. “I think that we’re just both at a place in life where our compatibility and our willingness to commit to each other finally aligned and now we’re getting married,” she says.

As for the wedding planning, Thore is already on top of it. However, her fiancé might need to do some catching up.

“I’ve already planned. He doesn’t know a thing,” she reveals. “Someone asked me earlier down in the green room, ‘Where are you guys thinking about getting married?’ I said, ‘Iceland.’ Jake said, ‘Oh, that would be cool.’ And I said, ‘What do you mean? We’ve already talked about this.’ ”

“Men! I basically got everything planned,” she jokes. “He’s not even on my level in any capacity at all, but that’s okay.”

The TV star also shared that she has plans for fans to be able to see the wedding as well. “I’ve shared my entire life for 14 seasons. I don’t think I’m going to stop at my wedding. So hopefully cameras will be there, yes,” she says.

Thore shared the engagement news just three days after she went on Instagram official with Beaudoin on Aug. 15. She posted a photo of the pair posing with their arms around each other on a scenic overlook along the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina and sharing a kiss.

For several months leading up to their hard-launch, the TLC star had only revealed glimpses of her then-mystery man. However, now that he has been revealed, Thore is only happy to show him off, even at the Creative Arts Emmys, where she presented the awards for Outstanding Technical Direction and Camerawork for a Special and Outstanding Technical Direction and Camerawork for a Series.

“It’s something that I love about him so much that I’ve always wanted in a relationship,” Thore tells PEOPLE. “And that is a man who’s not afraid to stand beside me and to put himself outside of his comfort zone, not only on television, but at events like this. So I feel so incredibly lucky to be here and so incredibly lucky to have Jake by my side.”
